HOW LONG WILL MY ADOPTION TAKE TO PROCESS?
Depending on how busy we are, it can take anywhere from 2-14 days. Speed of the process depends largely on your cooporation!
WHY CAN'T I JUST ADOPT ONE KITTEN?
We here at The Animal Project have a policy that all kittens under the age of 1 year must go in pairs or to a home with another young cat. This is crucial to their development as well as very beneficial to the new family. Kittens learn how to play, they are less destructive, and it helps with their long term health of dealing with anxiety and loneliness. Plus, kittens who play with each other are less likely to get into mischief on their own! There are no exceptions to this rule.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO COME TO MY HOME?
We take the happiness, health, and safety of our cats very seriously. Such an in depth adoption process ensures we only adopt to serious, committed, and safe homes.
WHY CAN'T I DECLAW MY CAT?
There are many reasons you shouldn't declaw cats! A cat uses its claws to defend itself, play, mark it's territory, groom, climb, and grip. Declawed cats can be incredibly anxious and uncomfortable. It's analogous to removing part of a human's fingers. If your cat is using it's claws inappropriately there are many ways you can correct the behavior. For more information please visit the ASPCA page on this topic.
CAN I COME VISIT CATS AT YOUR SHELTER?
We actually do not have a physical shelter! All of our cats are in foster homes when they are not at Petco on Saturdays. If you cannot make it to Petco from 3pm-7pm on Saturday and are seriously interested in adopting, we can try to schedule a visit at foster homes on a case by case basis. Please email us for details.
YOU KEEP THE CATS IN CAGES AT PETCO, CAN I KEEP MY CAT IN A CAGE AT HOME?
I HAVE A REALLY SHY CAT. DO YOU HAVE ANY SOCIALIZING TIPS TO HELP THE KITTY FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE AROUND PEOPLE?
Many, even most, of our cats and kittens are street rescues. Some have been around humans and others have had little to no interaction with people at all. Shyness can also have some basis in personality. Please view our socializing document for some tips to help cats and kittens overcome shyness and adjust to the human world.
WHY ARE WINDOW SCREENS REQUIRED WHEN I DON'T OPEN MY WINDOWS?
Even if you don't open your window, a visitor in your home or a super may open your window in case of an emergency, not knowing that you have a cat in the apartment. Without screens, it’s not a question of “if” the cat or kitten might fall, it’s more a question of “when.” Many cats and kittens die or are treated for very serious injuries in the city every year from window falls. That's why all windows must have permanent screens in your apartment if you're fostering or adopting a kitty from us. Please read our window screen policy here for more details.
